TWOS OR THREES FOR CELLOS

Well-known folk songs arranged by a cellist for two or three cellists. First part (tunes) in first position without extensions. Second parts in first position with some extensions. Third parts so easy that they can be notated à la 'Tetratunes' for beginners. Best played with parts 1+2, or parts 1+2+3; also works with parts 1+3. Easily adapted for GCSE ensemble work or busking - the tunes are in viola range, and the third parts are mostly possible for beginner double bassists. Originally published by Westfield Music, now available from Fentone (De Haske)

NICHOLAS TOPLEY'S DANCE TUNE BOOK OF 1848

Mostly Grades 3-6 in difficulty. Some use of tenor and treble clefs.

A SCALE AND ARPEGGIO WORKBOOK FOR CELLISTS

A different approach to scales and arpeggios! All cellists need to learn their scales and to understand the underlying theory, but some resist traditional methods. This workbook explains the theory succinctly and has the cellist write down the note names before learning the scales and arpeggios in groups according to printed finger pattern. Note names and playing quality, rather than reading staff-notation, becomes the focus. Follows the Associated Board's grade order of scales and arpeggios, with 'old' scales and arpeggios being revised as the student goes up through the grades.

A SCALE AND ARPEGGIO WORKBOOK FOR PIANISTS

As above, but presented in finger-pattern order rather than Associated Board order. With full-page fingering charts.

Use a set of highlighter pens to correlate hands-together patterns and practise off the keys before playing.
